We all know that first impressions matter, and your personal brand photos can be a powerful tool to showcase your unique story, captivate your audience, and boost your business.

The process of getting that perfect photo can be overwhelming if you don't know what to expect from your photographer.

Here are 5 essential steps to plan a successful personal brand photoshoot, help make sure that your shoot goes smoothly and results in a bank of amazing photos that will work for you for the next 12-18 months!

Know Your Why

Define Your Brand Identity - it’s really important to have a clear idea of your brand, what you need your photos for and why you love what you do! Ask yourself: What makes you unique? What values do you want to convey? What message do you want to leave with your audience?

Understanding these aspects will help you curate a photoshoot that authentically represents who you are and what your brand stands for. Take some time to reflect on your brand's identity. Consider the qualities that set you apart from others in your industry. Are you a confident go-getter, a compassionate leader, or a creative powerhouse? Embrace these aspects and let them shine through in your photos. Remember, authenticity is key!

Find your Ideal Photographer

It is really important that you find and a book a photographer whose work you love and who you connect with.

Look for a photographer who specialises in personal brand photography and who has experience on brand shoots.

Take the time to look through their portfolio to see if their style aligns with your aesthetic preferences, and if they create the images that you need.

Photographers all have their own style so research several to find a good fit for you and your brand.

Book a Connection Call so that we can discuss your vision and how we can bring it to life.

Share your brand story, discuss your ideas, and collaborate on the creative process.

I really believe that collaboration and communication is key and the success of a brand shoot is directly related to both client and photographer bringing both their parts.

Choose the Right Location

Once you have a clearer vision of your brand story, it's time to think about the perfect location for your personal brand photoshoot.
Choosing the right location sets the stage and creates the backdrop for your brand's visual identity. Think about how you want your brand to feel, how it aligns with your brand aesthetic. Whatever location you choose, make sure it reflects your brand's personality and resonates with your target audience.

I would highly recommend booking an indoor location to weatherproof your shoot day and also provide a comfortable base for you get ready and change in. An In-home Shoot also works really well and if this is not an option then I will be able to share some ideas around locations.

Create a Shot List

Where will your photos be used?

A shotlist is the BEST way to make sure your personal brand shoot meets your expectations.

A shoot planning session before your brandshoot is key to discuss the images you need, plan any props you need, plan the timings of the shoot and what is achievable within the timeframe.

Think about your brand stories that you want to tell. Maybe you want to show your process or showcase what a day in the life of your business looks like.

Make notes and let your photographer know so she has a clear understanding of your requirements on the day.

Here is an example of a shot list:

  • Welcoming About Me lifestyle headshot

  • Sitting enjoying a coffee and making notes

  • Working on laptop in cafe

  • Working with a client

  • Banner images for website/Linkedin with space for text

Wardrobe, Styling & Props

Choose outfits and accessories that are YOU and make you feel confident and align with your brand's image.

Think about your brand's color palette and select clothing that complements it. You can add accessories or pieces, your props in your brand colours but don’t over do it. Opt for solid, neutral colors and avoid anything too busy or distracting.

Consider the message you want to convey through your personal style. Are you polished and professional, boho-chic, or bold and edgy? Let your outfit reflect your brand's personality while still making you feel confident and comfortable. Remember, when you feel good in what you're wearing, it will show in your photos!

Props can add an extra layer of visual interest to your photos. Consider objects that are relevant to your brand or represent what you do. It could be anything from a laptop and notebook for a writer or an artist's paintbrushes and canvas. Use props strategically to enhance your brand's story and create strong storytelling images.
